The image on the right shows the final public television appearance of actress Glynis Johns, as she celebrates her 100th birthday. She was best known for her portrayal of the iconic women’s suffragette, Mrs. Winifred Banks, in the timeless 1964 Disney film ‘Mary Poppins’.
Notably, her star turn in the classic film included her performance of the rousing song "Sister Suffragette". Wearing a blue dress with white gloves, a straw hat and a 'Votes for Women' sash, Johns sings: "We're clearly soldiers in petticoats, and dauntless crusaders for women's votes."
A multitalented actress, dancer, pianist and singer, Johns earned a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for playing the widowed saloon and hotel owner Mrs. Firth in Fred Zinnemann’s Australia-set The Sundowners (1960). Additionally, she was the first artist to perform the song “Send in the Clowns,” which Stephen Sondheim wrote just for her, in her Tony Award-winning performance as Desiree Armfeldt in the original 1973 production of A Little Night Music.
Glynis Johns passed away yesterday, just three months following her birthday appearance. She leaves an indelible mark on the world of cinema.
