Are all RAM components the same size?

Hi, so I’m fairly new to the whole computer customisation thing, but I’ve been wanting to swap out my 1x8gb HyperX ram module with a 1x16gb one. The problem is when I look at 16gb components online they look a lot bigger than my 8gb one, and I don’t want to order a £70 16gb component only to find out it doesn’t fit. I know this is probably a stupid question, but are 16gb RAM components bigger than 8gb ones? If my laptop is fitted for 8gb of ram, is there no way for me to increase that to 16gb by installing a 16gb component? Thanks a lot
