I grew up pretty much religiously watching Hindi movies and dramas from birth till maybe 12 years old. They were constantly on in my house. Most of the movies and dramas I watched had English subtitles. Like I said I stopped watching/paying attention to anything Hindi related back when I was twelve. I'm nineteen now and recently I went past a person on the street who was on the phone talking in Hindi and I understood every word they were saying. It blew my mind and I went on YouTube to find people speaking Hindi to see if I actually could understand them and I could.
So, my question is how can I build on this? I started watching Indian movies again without subtitles and I would say I understand 90% of what is being said. As far as my speaking goes, I think if I had to put a sentence together I could but it would take a while. Whereas I could say the Hindi translated word for objects for example. I can't read or write it whatsoever. Any advice on where to start?
