Hello all - So here is the situation. We bought a new build and the garden is not done. Its basically rough graded at the level of the house. The soil is heavy clay. Our various neighbors have taken two approaches. 1. Dig 15/20cm and add top soil. or 2. Add border and top soil on top without digging.
Question is what is the best approach. What are the pros and cons? As I see it digging will be better as it will level to the house but just adding a border with soil would save (rough estimate is $1000) to grade the yard. One neighbor is convinced without digging plants will never grow well.
Secondly if I were to get a company to bring in a skid steer or other equipment what else should I ask to be done at the same time? For instance is it worth it to ask them to dig the borders deeper for plants and if so how deep? Should I ask for the patio area to be pre dug and how deep? Should I ask for the shed area to be pre-dug ready for base and how deep? And lastly since its heavy clay should I ask for an extra solution for drainage such as french drains to be pre-dug? Should I ask for top soil to be added at the same time?
Basically whats the best steps to rough landscape/grade your yard/garden before you start with adding plants/patio/shed etc
Many thanks - as you can probably tell I have absolutely no clue. We have asked a few people and we have conflicting advice.
