Need some advice

I have a small backyard, and the little grass that was growing in it got destroyed by my dogs playing in it. Now that theres nothing covering the dirt they’re coming back inside extra dirty. Can i get some advice and maybe an explanation of how i can cover the dirt now? My wife said maybe wood chips? Or replant grass? Sorry im not experienced or really knowledgeable
