Hi lab rats! I’m currently in a summer research program for undergrads. I’m in a wet lab for the summer and have never been in one before (my previous research experience was computational). I was excited about this because I would get to learn new skills that I otherwise wouldn’t in my home lab, but the post doc I work under seems to get frustrated with my questions and it seems like they just expect me to know things even though I’ve never done any of the techniques before. And when I make a mistake or am unsure of myself they just do what I was supposed to on their own without explaining what I’m doing wrong or how I can improve. This feels like a huge hinderance to my learning because I’m starting to find it difficult to ask questions without feeling like I’ll be seen as stupid. And when I make a mistake now I get so anxious about opening up about it or pointing it out because they might respond harshly. Does anyone have any advice? I’m no longer enjoying the program but don’t know how to just tough it out since I literally don’t have the skills I need to just get by day by day. Thanks!
