I don't currently have an animal handling certificate yet so I can't handle my mice by myself. My supervisors usually grab my mice for me but they're kinda rough on the mice, which leaves the mice being extremely scared and confused when I handle them. It takes me like 30 minutes to grab a single mouse to euthanize it because I try to calm it down before grabbing its tail, which takes too long and I think it stresses out the mice a lot more :(
Does anyone have any tips for grabbing the mice without prior handling? Idk if I can feed them raisins or something to get them distracted before grabbing their tails. I'm just using them for practice now so I don't think feeding prior to euthanasia would matter much, but I'm still new to this and I would love to hear suggestions/opinions on this. I really don't want my mice to die confused and scared, I just want to make sure they're as comfortable as I can before they're sacrificed.
Kinda related but I was hoping to work with rats because I read up on rat tickling before starting in this research assistant position. I can't really use it on mice so I just wanted to ask if are there any other similar methods for mice welfare? Thanks :)
