Should I pay $975 for two sessions (which probably means there's a third session ) to land an entry-level STEM job?
Post Body

Hi all,

I (B.Sc. Biochemistry) just got off the phone with Stem Career Services (https://stemcareerservices.com/).

I had been spamming my resume on Indeed since last May and only got zoom interviews and two on-site interviews one job offer. We're talking almost 200 click&submits.

Savings are running out so I decided to see if there was someone who could help me. I saw this on Google. Free consult:

He has a PhD, is a hiring manager, and he says he can help tailor my resume (he glanced at it for some seconds while on the phone with me). He says "I'm telling and not showing." He's going to do things like Linkedin profile revamp (i don't have one) and i guess interview help.

Obviously, I'm not dumb enough to just throw money. So I tried to clarify and ask if I'm hirable. He says he doesn't know until the questionnaire. The questionnaire first session is $500.

Does anyone else have experience with this service?

I don't want to be stingy -- if I've been trying to find a job for almost a year, then spending $1k to $1.5k isn't bad if he can land me a starting salary of like $30 for a 0 experience entry-level.

But I have to spend $500 to get him on a level where he can make an assessment. If he says I can't realistically find something more than $23 / hr with a 100% placement, then I'm only doing that one session and winging it from the advice he gives from there.

But, I mean, if he can guarantee $30 per hour or upwards of $25, then the $1,500 is fine because that comes out to $29.25 per hour if I work there a year. So you lose $1 per hour in exchange for a job higher salary. Obviously, you can also spend one/two Saturdays overtime in lab and probably get most of that $1,500 back.

So, to me, it all hinges on if he can guarantee a higher salary placement due to his services.

Lots of rewards, but also lots of risk:

-he doesn't have any reviews. I've searched. 0 reviews.

-he loses nothing if he's lying / incompetent. Like, if I don't land a job following his direction, there's no downside to him. All I can do is write a scathing reddit post... and that's it.

So, what are your thoughts? Have you used this service or any related service?
