Management and being sick

So do managers not have enough support if someone calls in sick ? I called in sick yesterday early morning and told one of my manager's I won't be at work Saturday or Sunday. I thought she told my main manager , but I guess not because he called me upset thinking I was doing a no show on purpose . I explained that I was sick and I can't make it yesterday and today , he asked if I could still make it because I'm 4 hours late into my shift I said no I have fever and I told him the soonest I can see my doctor is Tuesday. He told me that it was too late, but I said that was the only appointments that were available are on Tuesday and I will call them Wednesday to let them know how I'm feeling and he said ok and hope's that I feel better. My fever did go down today but I was still too achy and fatigued to work today . I guess managers don't have any measures in place if someone gets sick. I mean my PCP * primary care physician * , knows me and my physical and mental issues I'm sure if I'm still sick she can give me a letter I can fax to management about sick leave. But do we even get paid for sick leave or could they just fire us for that?

Edit: If I can get my doctor to write me a letter for a sick leave and I fax/email to my managers will that keep me from getting fired . Idk if I have a union but I think I do. So I should be ok right.
