I was taking Krav Maga at a school for 9 months or so where we worked RCAT pretty regularly. I can honestly say I think I learned a lot there, not enough to get complacent.
I changed schools thinking I would be able to pick up where I left off. So far I've been very disappointed. They don't spar at all as far as I can tell and if they teach gun disarm at all, it is on a rare occasion. I don't really understand that. I've never had a gun pointed at me, I have no way of knowing how my body will react in terms of fight, flight, or freeze but I do know that the only way to control your reaction is to practice the situation over and over again before it ever happens.
They also teach a couple of awkward techniques that I can't pull off in training and would NEVER attempt in a live situation.
They say martial arts is a journey. You get gradually better over time. I can accept that philosophy with any other martial art and many other things in general from music and painting to woodworking and welding. With Krav Maga however, I think in the exact opposite paradigm. I'm not in a great area, I could get a gun pulled on me anytime I go to the gas station. I want the best, simplest, and most effective moves so I can defend myself better TODAY. I thought that's what Krav was supposed to be and at my last school that's what they provided. What's with this place? Am I missing something?
