Does Kratom go bad? How do i preserve it?

In an NPR interview about a lady who uses kratom for pain, she mentions that she keeps the kratom in the refrigerator. Is there a reason for this? Does this preserve it for a longer time? I have always kept it in my cupboard. Does Kratom expire after a year or so? Just asking for science.... Thanks
