Heya! It's been a while since I've fed you with some k-pop history knowledge. So here's a fun poll in which you can test your historical spidey senses.
Let's set the scene : It's September of 1984 - which means, it's starting to get cold, schools have started, and the vibe in the music industry is going towards warm, cozy ballads and easy-to-listen songs to help you cope with the weather getting colder. The top singers on the male side are Jeon Youngrok, Kim Beom-ryong and Cho Yong-pil, with some special mention to the rocker bros like Sanwoollim and Boohwal.
While on the female side, our pop girls are eyeing to be main pop girls: Nami, Lee Eun-ha, Hye Eun-i, Yoon Shi-nae and the current it-girl who had an explosive debut 3 years ago - Min Hae-kyung. We even see the first efforts towards Hallyu with disco and trot singer Gye Eun-sook successfully promoting in Japan as an Enka singer - just a few years later in 1988, Cho Yong-pil would do the same, and even bag a performing spot at the NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen (and getting to interview Matsuda Seiko. THE Matsuda Seiko)
But while pop culture is all set for new horizons, the country of South Korea is still under the dictatorship regime (that is extremely EXTREMELY strong when it came to propaganda and pop culture). Songs, movies and broadcasts could be banned and punished if they showed any sign of disagreement towards the regime and its ideals and values, or showed signs of support to other, non-regime-approved ideals.
So with all of that in mind, let's look into a pretty weird happening from those times. Min Haekyung collaborates with an up and coming singer, Kim Hyunjoon, on a duet song called "My Life Belongs To Me (λμ μΈμμ λμ κ²)", and it becomes an hit, sweeping the major music shows (KBS Pop Music Top Ten/ Gayo Top Ten and MBC's Everyone's Popular Music/ Everyones Inki Gayo). If a song won on a music show for more than 5 weeks, it would be awarded a "Golden Cup" and thus, as good as immortalized- the weekly trophy was a hard one to get already, so getting it for 5 weeks in a row was great.
So now their duet is going strong on week 3 and week 4, and all the metrics - single sales, radio play, popularity votes - are right on the track to get them to week 5. In fact, any competition just can't match up.
But it doesn't happen.
Why?
(Solution will be in the comments soon! I want yall to guess lol)
