I want to preface by saying I don't hate any of the members. I used to be a big fan of Blackpink, especially when they debuted and I still want them to do well in life. (The decline in quality of music and lack of activity is honestly why I stopped tuning in as much that was high school, I am a full time 3rd year student in college now so I don't have as much free time to enjoy kpop fandom things). What I didn't realize was every single member of Blackpink was born into insane wealth, this is something I learned recently. I understand that a decent amount of kpop trainees are also rich because obviously that means their parents can afford to support them financially while they are training, but listening to Blackpink's new songs has become frustrating. I have gotten older and truly begun experiencing the hardships of the "real world". I also work full time, yet I am still incredibly poor, but my issue is that I just dislike that nearly every Blackpink song is about how much better they are than us and that they are so much more rich and successful then us all. It is cool every now and then, but when I can barely pay rent and feed myself and these people I once idolized are constantly flexing how awesome their lives are compared to mine, I just can't enjoy the music. It just feels tone deaf especially in this capitalist dystopia of a world we live in now. In a way it reminds me of Parasite, the rich are so damn oblivious to the reality all around them. And it adds extra annoyance when you consider they hardly had to climb to the top themselves. When you're born into so much wealth and prestige, it is not as difficult to gain notoriety. Why are you flexing that you're rich when you've always been rich? Some might argue that American rappers do the same, but I would have to disagree. Most American rappers come from actual situations of poverty and areas infested in crime, so of course it's a celebration to be rich and flaunt that wealth (although at some point I also find that annoying), but at least I know they actually worked for every dollar. They're experiencing a genuine relief from poverty and the horrible life it makes for us. It feels like a motivating come up story rather than conventionally attractive rich girls who have always had everything they've wanted using American rapper's aesthetics just to put everyone else down. Its just like, we get it, you're pretty and rich, and we aren't...can you write about anything else?
** I am sure they will anger some people and prompt the "then just don't listen" response and I don't anymore, but when you used to closely support a group so much, I feel like I can have an opinion. Especially when I feel like they hardly care about their fans and the fame they've given them anyway. Think about humble artists that truly came from nothing, for example IU, and everything she has done for her supporters and how grateful she is for her success. It just feel authentic, so of course I'll enjoy supporting her!
edit: getting a lot of backlash and reports from blinks now. guys this is a forum to rant. don’t be so sensitive because someone has a different opinion than you. if that does bother you, maybe a rant forum isn’t the place to be.
