toxic fandom culture

with the recent events regarding yuta, i have come to realise how truly cult-ish kpop fandoms are; as if we weren’t already aware of the toxicity, this situation really showed how people would so willingly defend their idols to their deathbed. for idols who they don’t know and will never know personally to determine what their true personality is like and if they are worth defending.

i have seen too many people throw their morals away to defend yuta when he is most definitely in the wrong here and shouldn’t need coddling like this. he is a grown man for gods sake, he knew what he was doing affiliating with such a person as rheekun. it makes me sick how nctzens are gaslighting and guilt-tripping people who didn’t “trust” him.

kpop is becoming more of an obligation than anything, if you don’t constantly stream and vote to get wins, if you aren’t active 24/7 and don’t talk about certain idols/groups, if you don’t obsessively defend your idols wrongdoings.

not to mention, the whole concept of an idol is to present a worthy image for fans to indulge their fantasies, with despite idols not even knowing of their existence. people have got to realise the sheer difference between an idol persona and real personality. idol fanservice was made to keep fans hooked into the group by believing that they have some sort of connection with the idol, be it romantically or platonically. i wish more people would realise how toxic this industry really is, especially fandom culture. human before kpop stan, morals before kpop.

*i used fandom as the flair rather than nct because this touches on the yuta situation but also talks about fandom culture

Just as people shouldn't blindly defend anyone, blindly hating and canceling people doesn't achieve anything either. The more information that comes out on the Yuta thing, it's clear that everything was blown way out of proportion by I-fans. The best way to approach controversies like this is to WAIT and see for actual legitimate information to come out. Some people jump to hating to seem woke when in reality it perpetuates lies and misinformation. You're not any better if you do that in comparison to those who blindly defend.

The man is Korean - he addressed the issue on his Instagram story. Not sure how much everything lines up now that he's addressed it. People really jumped the gun to call Yuta an imperialist/anti-Korean with no evidence to back it up.

I think the ones who REALLY blew it up is I-fans, who have been copy-pasting the same line (calling Rheekun "misogynist & anti-Korean) without any evidence to back it up.
