Guaging fuzzy bulky blanket yarn

I'm trying to knit a blanket with a pattern. I've nevertheless tried to guage before, I've only used a few patterns over the years, I winged everything else. Not sure how to read the Susan bates "knit-chek" metal thing I have.
It will be 6 years next month, that I first started knitting. So I go off the stitches on the needle for the stitches per inch? Its hard for me to try and count stitches in the knitted rows because the yarn is the fuzzy Bernat blanket yarn.
