Help! Decreasing the crown of a hat knit in the round.

Post Body

I've made countless hats on circular needles and dpns, but I've always done the decrease at the crown by placing a marker every so many stitches and then decrease by knitting two together at each marker. This always makes like a spiral pattern at the crown.

I see hats all the time that don't have this spiral visible at the crown, and I think some hats look so much better without it, but I have yet to read a pattern without this method of decreasing.

My question is: are there different ways to do it, and are they as universally applicable as the method I've mentioned?

Thanks in advance!
