I found an extra steel carpenter square in the garage and decided to attempt to make a chef knife for my wife. Is this thing gonna suck? Info on type of steel and how to continue from here would be greatly appreciated.

It wont be hardenable, so it wont cut well or hold/take a good edge. but you should go ahead and finish it for practice. Just keep it as a display piece or something. Ive made a couple out of shit steel when i didnt have any good steel, just for fun
