MAN am I bad at this
Post Body

So I've watched a few videos aimed at beginners, and ive read a decent bit, and tried different hammer stones, and the only thing im doing consistently is snapping my rocks in half and failing to control where or how big my flakes are coming off. Real sad caveman hours out here.

This is the rock I'm currently banging away at. Can anyone give me any kind of pointers at all?.

My problem is likely compounded by the fact that I have no idea what im looking for and am relying on an app to identify my rocks

I'm starting to get the feeling that my particular corner of texas doesnt have much/any knapable material, with the possible exception of the copious amounts of quartz.

Would I be correct in assuming that trying to learn to knap on quartz would be a mistake?

North of ftw, I think if I was still out in dallas I'd be close enough to the trinity river to find some
