Carrie and Law Firms

On more than one occasion when Carrie meets someone she'll tell them what law firm she works for. Then the person will ask something like, "Oh, so you're a lawyer?" then Carrie inevitably gets embarrassed and says she's a legal secretary. Why not say "I'm a legal secretary at...."? I know Carrie is all about Manhattan and designer clothes and status but I feel like she's just setting herself up for embarrassment.
Which reminds me - why in the hell does a secretary need a home office?!
