Abysmal PC performance

I was happy to see this game fully supports 21:9, including cutscenes, but the optimization is horrible.

i7 4790k, 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3, GTX 1080, SSD install, latest windows and drivers, playing at 3440x1440

I've only made it to the first nightfall in the game and I was managing 50-60 on medium, as soon as it got dark and started to rain my fps tanked to 20, set graphics to low and still get 20, even after daybreak Nvidia Geforce is recommending I play on the lowest possible settings at 3440x1440.

I understand that I'm playing at 1440p but I'd imagine I have the hardware.

I'm enjoying the game for what it is but I can't get into the game due to these issues
