Hi all! I'm still pretty new to kilting in general, but I'm prepping for RenFest in a couple of weeks with a pseudo-historical outfit embracing my Scottish ancestry. Bought the Jacobite shirt just recently. I'm hoping to get either a kilt or a greatkilt in my family's true ancestral tartan if the shops carry it, but this is the best I've got for now. What do you lot think?
Generally looks good.
Being critical though:
shirt, kilt etc look a little on the cheaper side but that's not necessarily an issue in itself as they look good. What gives them away is, especially the kilt is all of the creases. Wool kilts don't tend to do that as much. So a hint would be to get out the iron and it'll remove that issue of it looking like a cheaper kilt.
You've tied the thong on the shirt like you'd tie your shoes. Not necessarily wrong, just looks a bit odd. Generally ghillie shirts are left open and loose. If they're tied, which is unusual, it's usually just in a simple knot.
Personal choice but I have always thought a kilt without a belt looks like it's missing something. It's less noticeable with a waistcoat Vs ghillie shirt, but I'd personally still wear one either way.
Dress shoes aren't necessarily wrong, they're fine. They just look a little mismatched when wearing a ghillie shirt. Ghillie shirts are less formal and whilst formal shoes can be worn with them it's generally better if it's a decent set of brogues or leather hiking type boots. They're fine as is it's just a thought in how to make it look a bit better.
Overall decent effort though and a great place for someone who's just trying to get into it to have started.

It's one of those things, everyone starts somewhere with everything and we don't always have the money to jump into the deep end. It's a great start and meant if kilts etc weren't for you then at least you didn't spend a fortune on it. Great place to start and you can always experiment with what works best for you.
