I live on KLO which was recently 'expanded' to accomodate two perfectly clear and generously sized bike lanes. And yet WITHOUT FAIL, every time I am walking on the sidewalk with my kid there are bikers on the frigging thing- sometimes a group of them!- and we have to move onto the grass to let them pass. I'm not kidding when I say I see about 25% of bikers using the lanes and 75% using the sidewalk.
The kids mounting the sidewalk, I get, they're probably not 100% about bike courtesy/rules and are apprehensive about being too close to traffic. But if you're an adult and there are clearly demarcated bike lanes for you to use, USE THEM!
The worst thing about the bikers thinking the sidewalk is their own in KLO in particular is that's it's a working-class residential neighborhood that's home to a lot of people with little kids and old people. There's a retirement home on my block and there are a lot of mobility-impaired seniors who go for walks every single day. People in walkers. I understand most people are going to swerve out of the way for a toddler or an old lady but it's just an accident waiting to happen.
So if you're the kind of jerk who thinks the new bike lanes in this city are optional, please think again because I guarantee you're annoying everyone trying to get somewhere on foot.
