I want to start off by saying there are things I like about Shotokan - mainly the footwork, distancing, and kizame zuki, which is why I'm still training in Shotokan.
However, I find the kata to be largely just sort of weird. By weird, I mean full of bunkai or movements that I wouldn't want to use in actual combat. My background is in Goju-Ryu, so maybe I'm just biased in favor of Naha-te karate, but in Goju's kata, I can say "Yea, I can see myself using that" for a majority of the bunkai, but not all of course. For Shotokan, I feel like the majority of bunkai are just impractical or wouldn't work most of the time.
Does anyone else feel this way about the Shotokan kata? I've seen some cool things from Heian Shodan believe it or not, but I feel like the Heian's are just strange with their choice of body movements.
