I’m in Michigan and am taking practices at Bushido Martial Arts. I looked into what qualifies as a “McDojo” and the only things that I see this school kinda tick is that they don’t compete in a lot of tournaments, though they compete in one with a select sensei. They were explaining it was more due to the rules of the tournaments and the “bureaucracy” but I don’t know if I should trust that. They also have a set number of classes everyone takes regardless of skill, so everyone moves at the same time. When I practiced recently it did feel genuine, and the instructors did have good knowledge on Karate itself. One thing I’m also skeptical about is that the owner says it takes about 4 to 5 years to get a black belt, which I personally don’t know how long it usually takes. I’m wondering if these “warning signs” are anything I should be worried about. Btw, there is sparing.
