My categories links are not working

I changed my category slug. Now my category pages won’t open.
Hey guys. The category slug of my pages was sitename/category/category name before. I recently found out that I can remove the category name from the slug and that’s it better for seo. So I added a . To the perma link. The problem now is that my categories link is now the way I want but no matter what I do even if I create a new category it always shows as empty as if I create a new category. Please how can I fix.
