*Sorry. I tried to fix the misspelled “necessity” in the title but it isn’t letting me edit the title 🤦♂️
Some of you are going to think this sounds extremely petty, and it probably does, but hopefully some will see where I am coming from.
I served on a capital murder jury in October 2021 (was the foreman). I just got a notice in the mail that I have been summoned again in December. They couldn’t wait for that 2 year window to open back up, could they? 😆
Anyway, I coach and I teach for a living. We’ve got a really good football team this year. Good enough to possibly play for the state championship (currently ranked top 5 in the state). In over 20 years of coaching, I’ve never had the opportunity to coach in a football state championship (as a head coach, I’ve coached in two soccer state championships (lost both)). In football, I am an assistant coach. We are a small town and everything will essentially shut down if we play in the state championship game.
I’ve been summoned for the week of the title game (title game is scheduled for 11 am in a Friday) and it may be as late as the Friday night before I’m supposed to report on that Monday that I will know (we have two games we have to win between now and then, so it could be earlier). Even if I’m forced to go to jury duty, my head would simply not be in the case/courtroom on that Friday. Any chance this is a good enough reason to get out of it or be rescheduled?
And I know I added public necessity to the title and this has nothing to do with that. But I’m also concerned for my classes as this means I will be at jury duty for a week or two as we approach midterms (mid Dec). And honestly, I could find a way to make that part work, as I work with a great faculty, but I don’t mind sneaking that in there if it would help 😆
Thoughts? Is it something worth trying to get out of? Or would I look stupid using this as a reason? I ask because I know that not everyone is a sports person, but coaching in that game would mean a lot to me. Of course, we coach for the kids, but it would completely shatter me if I wasforced to miss out on this opportunity.
