A Chat With Stephan Schütze, OG Composer Those of us who have downloaded the Operation Genesis demo (and if you haven't, what the hell are you waiting for?) have not only been getting a taste of the upcoming park-building title, but also a preview of some of the really great JP-like music composed specifically for the game. I went to Blue Tongue to find out more about the man behind the music, Stephan Schutze, and thankfully got a few questions answered from Mr. Schutze himself: DJP3P: First off, not only did you do the music for OG, but you did the sound effects and audio as well? Did you know what you were getting into when you signed on? Stephan: I've been working at Bluetongue for over three years now, I did all the music and sounds for Starship Troopers [Bluetongue's previous game -Dan] as well so I had a pretty good idea of what Jurassic Park would entail.
DJP3P: Could you talk a little about your background.. who are you, where did you come from, and how did you get into composing?
Stephan: Stephan Schütze, born in England, I was raised in Australia. I studied classical instrumental music, then worked for several years as a professional musician in the Australian Army. After that I spent a couple of years working and studying in Europe and the UK before returning to Australia where I did my second degree in music technology and then started at Bluetongue. I have always been involved in music in someway or other, composing was just the place I always wanted to be.
DJP3P: What are some of your musical influences?
Stephan: I was brought up listening to a lot of classical music, but film music has always been one of my great loves. John Williams has definitely been a strong influence, as have others like James Horner, Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. There have of course been many others, but the list could get kind of long. I also have a great love for many of the composers who write for Japanese Anime films, there is some excellent work being written there, I would love one day to have the opportunity to write for such a film, but I think that is pretty unlikely living outside of Japan.
DJP3P: Did you listen to Don Davis' JP3 score? How do you think his approach to adapting the famous JP music differed from your approach?
Stephan: I studied the JP3 music quite thoroughly, and we ended up using the track "The Dinosaur Flyby" in Operation Genesis. I had to rearrange Don Davis original score because he had 120 piece orchestra and I only had a 70 piece. It was a great piece of music, and I thought in general Mr. Davis did an excellent job adapting Williams work. John Williams is a hard act to follow, especially as he is so well known, but I found a lot of Don Davis original contributions to JP3 worked beautifully. I tried to follow this same idea of using the original material in a few places where it would really bring out the feel of Jurassic Park, but in most other places I just tried to capture the spirit of Jurassic Park with new material.
DJP3P: The OG music was performed live by the Melbourne Symphony.. first of all, who's idea was it to go with a live symphony? And why?
Stephan: I've always felt that there is no substitute for a real orchestra, and the "Life" they bring to a score. Our Executive Producers at Universal seemed to have similar feelings, so after a few discussion it was agreed that this would be the best way to go. Melbourne Symphony is arguably the best orchestra in Australia, so we would get the best results in the end.
DJP3P: How was it working with the MSO? Was it chaotic to get everything right in that small amount of time you had them for? Did you orchestrate and conduct as well?
Stephan: Melbourne Symphony is a world class orchestra, and their professionalism showed at all times. I think the only chaos that was occurring was in my head. It was a new experience for me, and one I enjoyed very much. I orchestrated and scored all the music, but I did not conduct, as that is a different skill in itself. A gentleman named Graham Abbott conducted, he is well known in Australia and is experienced with film score work, which is basically what we were doing.
DJP3P: Finally, do you think it's possible we can convince Universal to release the OG soundtrack on CD? Or are there any plans?
Stephan: I know of no plans as yet to release the soundtrack, but please feel free to send them petitions with thousands of names asking for it, I'm sure that will convince them its a good idea.
Thanks for your time Stephan! If you have the OG demo and want to hear some of Mr. Schutze's songs while not in the game, use Winamp and browse to the "C:\Program Files\Universal Interactive\Blue Tongue Software\Jurassic Park Operation Genesis Demo\JPOGDEMO\Data\Music\" folder. Bluetongue promises more music in the full version.
