So I started Judo September of 2023, Im currently a orange belt & I feel I like a lot of confidence. I donβt know how to be more confident in general training and during randori. In Newaza I always freeze when im trying to break out from a pin and to the same trying to pin someone else. I get in a good position and its like I forget everything I learned. I feel like I think too much & I know im unconfident. Even when learning new throws I just feel super not confident and lacking when I feel I should be a lot better. I go to class 2-4 times a week. Are there anyways to build better confidence?
Ps. I have a learning disability and learn things slower, but either way I know I lack confidence and feel I should be doing better.
Okay, I might be newer than you (started around august of this year), but I feel largely the same. I feel like I'm such a slow learner. Thankfully my teachers and partners are rather patient with me, and I'm not planning to like ever be competitive or anything. One of the older guys in the dojo once said "Sometimes it feels like people forget everything they learn as soon as they hear 'hajime'."
So, you're not alone. The fact that you haven't given up yet is the most important thing. I believe you, like me, will get there eventually. That same old guy has often told me "Judo is a lifelong curriculum." I've been talking with another judoka online and she only took like a month or two of lessons and already is much better than me (unless she's just lying but I don't think she is). She got a headstart on athleticism and knowing how to move her body from playing sports in high school, while I was a theater and band kid.
Sorry, kinda got off on a tangent, but I guess what I'm trying to say is whether you are walking slowly up the path or are able to bound ahead of everyone else, the most important part is that you are walking it.
