Trying to have "loading" text in div while function runs

I'm new to JavaScript in general so my Google searching is getting me nowhere. Basically I have a function that will return a string representation of the system status and I want to set a div elements inner html to that value. However, I want to having some loading text fill the blank space while the function is running.
Can someone help point me in the right direction?
