Investigative Reporter with international news organization (ICIJ)
Post Body

We are looking for an investigative reporter to join our team. /u/ICIJ is the team behind the /r/PanamaPapers, Implant Files and other global investigations.

We want an enterprising journalist with a track record of unearthing stories that expose abuse and hold the powerful to account. We believe in the power of journalism to force change — and so should you.

We are *not* like other news organizations. We focus most of our attention on big stories that have the potential to shake the world. And we do it in collaboration with reporters from around the globe.

To be very clear: these partnerships aren’t just a feature of our work, they are core to our identity and mission. While finding and telling impactful stories would be your primary responsibility, everyone at ICIJ is expected to assist our partners when needed to ensure they are successful, too.

We can’t stress this enough: If the idea of working with dozens or hundreds of other journalists at a time freaks you out, this is definitely not the job for you.

Why you should work for ICIJ

At any given time we are working with dozens or even hundreds of the best investigative journalists on the planet. The stories we do together matter.

Governments have recouped more than $1.2 billion from tax evaders identified in our Pulitzer Prize-winning Panama Papers investigation, heads of state have lost their jobs and innumerable investigations have been launched.

In the five months since our Implant Files investigation first published, governments around the world have promised reforms and several of the most harmful medical devices that we identified have been pulled from the market.

As an ICIJ reporter, you would serve a key role in propelling investigations like these, from concept through to publication. You would do it with the support of our excellent team of techies, data journalists, reporters and editors — and you would do it without fear of outside pressure or influence.

As a nonprofit focused solely on investigative journalism, we operate with complete independence. No one tells us what to cover, or not to cover. We follow the story as far as it goes, no matter what.

Who is the ideal ICIJ journalist?

We don’t care about your job title or the college you attended. We do care deeply about stories, and believe that the story should always be the star. To that end, what matters most to us is the demonstrated ability to find and report stories with the highest impact potential.

In your application, please tell us about the stories you’ve found and told, and what happened as a result.

Quantitative evidence forms the bedrock of most of our investigations. So it is also crucial that you understand how to identify and obtain useful data, and that you can think creatively about how it can be used to buttress or solidify your reporting.

A business reporting background and language skills (other than English) are a plus.

Strong writing ability and an international mindset are a must.

To be successful at ICIJ means having a diplomat’s mindset and lots of patience — while staying uncompromising in your commitment to accuracy and fairness.

Some reporters work well with others. Some do not. If you feel like you are in the latter category, this job is not for you.

Want to apply?

Send a resume and clips, plus a memo explaining why you are the right fit for the job, to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]). Some questions you might consider: What stories should we be pursuing? How would your skills complement what we already do? How have your past reporting challenges prepared you for those you will face at ICIJ?

Any questions, feel free to DM us, or put them in the comments and we'll answer here too :)
