I’m interviewing for senior-level copywriter positions. As a creative, it’s not uncommon to do some kind of skills assessment as part of an interview process. But I need some perspective here.
One company I’m interviewing with is on the small side, but they check all the boxes for me. Well-structured, good pay, remote, etc. So far I’ve met with a recruiter and some members of the marketing team, all of whom I really liked and connected with.
I got my writing assignment from them and it’s FOUR separate pieces of content, including rewriting a page from their website and drafting a new blog post.
Additionally, they asked me to take not one, not two, but THREE personality assessments.
I’m really turned off by these requests. Obviously they’ve seen my portfolio, so they have an idea of the breadth of my writing. And I would think interviews would speak more to my personality than a quiz ever could. (But what do I know?)
It sucks because I really like what I’ve seen of this company so far. The people seem so warm and down-to-earth, and their interview questions demonstrate that they really want their next hire to be satisfied and happy long-term. But I’m worried that this interview process indicates some deeper dysfunction.
For context, I completed the entire interview process with Facebook a couple of years ago, and even their skills assessment wasn’t this rigorous.
What do you guys think? How much of this type of applicant assessment is too much?
