I recently got promoted and its a promotion I worked VERY hard to get...I made so many sacrifices in my personal life for the past two years because I thought there would be at least a 8-10k bump....this is based on the average salary for that position in my area.
I even had been doing the responsibilities of this position for a year prior to the promotion. When it finally happened, it turns out oh...its 3k. The thing is, they didn't have the recruiter tell me. My manager told me because they made some weird assumption that I would just accept that number. When I asked them about talking about the compensation, HR told me "just FYI, it was originally supposed to be 2k but your manager talked your director into bumping up to 3k." This didn't make me feel any better, this was just insulting. I practically had to beg them for a chance to plead my case.
Entry level hourly position employees when they get promoted get $1/hour more. If you had given me a 2k bump, it would have literally been less than a $1/hour increase...and thats assuming I work just 40 hours (I don't because I'm salaried) I don't understand why that was even on the table. Now I get $1.43 more per hour. Wow. They also refused to provide me with an offer letter and refused to give me an actual date when I had to accept the offer by. They brought up some vague answers about how it wouldn't be fair to other people who are the same position but have been here longer. The person they had in mind is some community college grad who plays candy crush at her desk all day while I had to take on her responsibilities (despite not having the pay raise or title) because she couldn't handle them. They ultimately ended up sending me an email the next week saying they wouldn't budge.
At this point, I am completely demoralized. I don't feel the point in doing my best work. There is unlikely to be any room for more growth unless my direct manager leaves and I doubt she will. Even if she did in 2-3 years and I took her position, they'd give me what? Another 3.1k? What a joke. I am already job hunting at the moment but until then, is there any point in letting my manager and director know how insulted I am? First that 2k was even on the table at any point and second, the fact that I'm not getting any more than 3k because I'm being compared to a lazy coworker?
They always say they have an open door policy. I am very tempted to flat out say, whats left for me at this company in terms of growth? Sure they can always find a replacement but they know and I know that they'd be hard pressed to find an employee that has been as hardworking, versatile, and dedicated as I have been.
