So in addition to all the difficulties that everybody else has reported, I have another problem with my job search. In the last year of job hunting, I've gotten to the verbal offer stage TWICE and both times the offer has been revoked. Talk about frustrating!
I mean it's SO hard to do the whole application/interviewing process with interviews being few and far between that when you get to a verbal offer and then have the whole thing fall apart and have to start over.... makes you want to cry.
The first one that got revoked was bizarre. The recruiter told me that they'd accidentally offered the single job to multiple people.
The one I just had yanked out from under me was totally my fault. They wanted to check references, so I gave them a list of 5 people. One was recent, a coworker with my current job, so that was good. But the rest were old and I've been negligent in keeping up to date with them so one didn't feel comfortable giving a reference, one phone number was no longer in service and the others were unresponsive. The interviewer asked me for other references, so I hunted down former coworkers in LinkedIn and sent them four more early this week. But today they tell me that they feel that made me look unprepared and reflected poorly on me for a client-facing job. They have a very valid point, so I'm taking it as a lesson learned. But it's still frustrating. They didn't even bother to call the new references.
Just, ugh.
Well, to make lemonade out of lemons, who else here can top me with more than two verbal offers being yanked before being put to paper?
