I verbally accepted a job offer and I think I may be getting another one. How do I handle this with tact without shooting myself in the foot?

Post Body

After 6 months of searching for a job with no leads, I have had 4 opportunities come my way all at once.

  • Company A: Gave me a verbal offer 2 days ago and told me I will be getting an official offer packet early next week. I'm not sure if I verbally accepted it directly, as I may have said something like "Wow! That's great. I am looking forward to it!." I am scheduled to meet the Area Sales Director next week shortly after, which is who gave me the verbal offer. It was a relatively long interview process with a lot of layers.
  • Company B: The Area Sales Director for this company spoke with me last week and it went very well. He told me I'd get the job, without telling me. Anyway, I got an email from him today asking to meet him next week as well. If I met him, I am 98% sure it would result in an offer. Of course, I know I can't bank on that. The interview process was extremely quick and this is the guy who would make the hiring decision.
  • Company C**:** OTE is double of A/B, they loved me, but there's a possibility I would become a raging alco or crazy person because the work is too demanding for my MH at this moment. Last time I put too much on my plate I ended up in rehab. It also was not in my target location, which is a large impetuous for the new job in the first place.
  • Company D: I just didn't like them as much and rejected the opportunity to the final interview after weeks of interviews with them, because it was the same day I spoke with A.

And then there were 2...

Additional Details:

  • Company A is a large (700-800 people) privately held company and has a clear path to leadership
  • Company A potentially has a longer ramp up period than B
  • Company B is public, which surprised me with the swiftness of the process
  • I need time to wrap up some deals at my current company and Company A was extremely accommodating and allowed for a start date of 4/1 which would allow me to do that
  • Company B would likely need a sooner date, but I haven't specified this with them yet and explained my situation of needing to close these last few deals
  • The pay is structured a bit differently, but the verifiable OTE for both is between $150-$200
  • They both have a 4.2 on Glassdoor –– for what that's worth (or not worth)
  • It is the same exact job, but Company B calls it a "Sales Manager" while Company A calls it a "Sales Consultant"

Important footnote: I was verbally offered a role (let's call this Company X) that was a little too good to be true from another publicly traded company after 2 short interviews. However, this was contingent upon one additional piece of licensing thing I would need to obtain, of which I had already started the process. Said great, thanks, I will keep you posted (it was through the State so there was literally absolutely no way to do it sooner than I did, which was 12 days). I provided 3-4 updates, all receiving feedback that did not indicate anything other than the fact we were on track. So on that 12th day, I call him the second it was completed. In a million words he told me they hired someone else. Dick move IMO, but it made me question if I wanted to work for a company with such shady ethics.

Now, I have that and both A/B don't require it, but it's a benefit. However, I am scared to pass on B because of what happened with X. I knew it would probably be an issue with Company X, but they claimed it could be obtained after being hired. But that's not the point.

The ONLY possible speed bump I could think of would be one night in county jail for a Reckless Driving conviction (DUI charge) that would come up on my background check, from a few years ago. It's unlikely, but I suppose it is definitely possible for it to cause for disqualification. It's a sales job, so it's not like I'm a truck driver or pilot. But it is definitely causing me some anxiety and a possibility I am trying to weigh when make this decision.

Otherwise, I am a highly qualified, impressive and overall stand out candidate. Reddit will probably shit on me for this, but it's objectively true and I don't know how else to put it.

  1. How do I respond to the email from Company B? My gut tells me just to be honest. Tell him the truth and graciously thank him, hope to stay in touch, etc.
  2. Do I take the meeting, see if I can stall the offer from A, and try to play my hand at that? I suppose this would be the best failsafe but may backfire. Also, just not really my personality to BS or beat around the bush. I get awkward.
  3. Open to any other suggestions, advice.

Please advise!
