Yesterday I started a new job that only lasted an excruciating 5 hours. lol I am going to share the experience because it is humorous in an odd way.
The job was with a company that had the word “communication” in their name. We tell this because communication is definitely NOT their strength. We LOVE technology in this house, we have helped create apps and automated work boards for companies to aid in their business endeavors… this is the first time we have seen such technology be used in a destructive way.
The day before the job started a deluge of emails came in numbered with conflicting numerical sequences. Obviously it was someone automating their task of onboarding and they did not take into account the order in which the emails came in. Trying to make sense of this random 20 plus email regurgitation I watch a few of the links. Since the emails were out of order it made no real sense so obviously the first day logging in would sort this out. NOT. Logging into the system was fine and there they were again the emails in a wrike work task list. 😆 there was no start here or welcome letter just these random links with no real order to them as all the time stamps were the same. Note to self about automation… don’t just stamp with the time hour and minutes… if you are going to hit a button that requires multiple emails tasks make sure there are milliseconds on the timestamp.
Anyhow not to bore the reader here let’s just say this on multiple links it was reemphasized to NOT contact anyone for help but to search out all avenues prior. So the issue was the resources needed were hidden in the heap of tossed links. I love an Easter egg hunt but this one wasn’t ending in a fun animation just frustrating trial and errors.
Being someone who has been in on the building of such platforms, I know the worst thing you can do is allow someone who does not know your system in it to mess it up without providing proper training. Remember the company has “communication” in their name.
Since I watched all the email links and still wasn’t totally trained as to how their system worked, took some not so fun unthought out learning quizzes that didn’t “teach” anything unless you already knew the company and their nomenclature.
I contacted the placement company to tell them of the issues… moments later I just received more emails … ones that I should have received before any of the other emails. I laughed at the nonsensical automated reality that I had walked into. Like I said I LOVE technology but even AI could have done a better job onboarding. Moral of this story… when you walk into a blue room don’t hope it will turn into a rosy pink one … as Maya Angelou said “When people show you who they are, believe them the first time” these people were not every going to be a culture of communication, they were only interested in the art of “schlock communication, and non existent community”. Needless to say I said no thank you.
All this being said my ask of the community is what do you think about being or working at a company that is completely automated… I find it an interesting subject…. Thoughts?
