How to avoid salary expectations question?

Post Body

Hey guys, often during a first interview the question of "so, what are your salary expectations" comes up. I know you should never be the first one to give a number, and that giving a number at all during the first interview may be a mistake since there's still a bunch of candidates so in the hiring managers eyes you're nothing special yet. That being said, how exactly do you avoid the question, when is it safe to answer, and is the number you give just based on current going market value?

Thank you
