Mk6 Jetta - Does the axle HAVE to come out to release the front struts?

It’s a 2014 Jetta SE 1.8T. All the videos i’m finding on youtube involve unbolting the axle and control arm. Is it possible to get them out with a strut spread and hammering the knuckle down or is there not enough clearance? Any tips for the job?
