I just do not understand...

When I move my lower jaw forward, I notice it is easier to breath. So with lower jaw lengthening, how does that help with breathing? The lower jaw is lengthened, the entire lower jaw isn't moved forward.
Is anyone here knowledgeable on this and able to help answer my question?
