noob javascript question. where to learn?

So I've noticed various redditors who create javascripts that they enter in the address bar and would make all images (from imgur) load on the page.
Example: javascript:var txt="Hello world!";alert(txt);
I want to learn more about this. What is this called/what can I google to find more about this?
I want to start by just looking at a webpage, search for a string, and creating a link at those strings. Any suggestions? Thanks!
