Do I just get a Tax mail for tax filing?

I am an international research student in japan working as a part time research assistant in a national university.
I understand that some taxes will have already been deducted from the salary, but I sometimes see some people have mail for tax and I don’t. They told me that they will mail me if I ever need to(since they said there is some salary I need to earn before I need to do that).
Is this correct?
