Would like to know more about this calligraphy please!

This is on the cover of a book I've started reading, I know it translates to "beginners mind" but as I know next to nothing about calligraphy, I wasn't sure what exact part meant "beginners mind" and what the rest of it says/means.
Why I ask is I would love to get this as a tattoo but I just don't know what parts I would need to keep and if its the type of thing that has to be vertical or if the same thing could be written multiple ways.
Again, sorry for the complete ignorance! But I'm eager to learn haha
