Is it ever acceptable to initiate conversations with strangers on Japanese trains? How far off the beaten track would you have to be?

Post Body

I love talking to people on long flights and train rides. I understand no-one is interested in talking to strangers on a commute, but on longer rides I've had fun conversations with many different people all over the world. Even in "socially avoidant" Sweden you can make new acquaintances during long-distance travel. In Japan, I haven't tried this that much, but once on a long trip from Tokyo to Akita I tried to talk to some people I'd spent several hours next to. It was obvious that they thought I was acting strange. So are there any train stretches on which people actually strike up conversations?

Edit: A ride to Akita from Tokyo takes over 4 hours and isn't quite like a normal Shinkansen ride. I assumed the non-commuter nature of it would make people a little bit more open.
