JA's writing skills: changing pov
Post Body

So a common piece of writing advice is that if you have multiple pov, only change at the end of the chapter, or section, even in third person. And I've read books that have disobeyed this rule and I've found this jolting. Meanwhile JA changes after or during a paragraph and I don't recall ever finding this jolting.

I reckon what JA is doing is changing while one character is thinking of the other.

Occupied in observing Mr. Bingley’s attentions to her sister, Elizabeth was far from suspecting that she was herself becoming an object of some interest in the eyes of his friend. Mr. Darcy had at first scarcely allowed her to be pretty; he had looked at her without admiration at the ball; and when they next met, he looked at her only to criticise.

...

He began to wish to know more of her, and as a step towards conversing with her himself, attended to her conversation with others. His doing so drew her notice.

...

Miss Bingley made no answer, and soon afterwards she got up and walked about the room. Her figure was elegant, and she walked well; but Darcy, at whom it was all aimed, was still inflexibly studious. In the desperation of her feelings, she resolved on one effort more, and, turning to Elizabeth, said: “Miss Eliza Bennet, let me persuade you to follow my example, and take a turn about the room. I assure you it is very refreshing after sitting so long in one attitude.” Elizabeth was surprised, but agreed to it immediately.

What do you guys think? Is this the trick, or does JA have other tools? Or do you find these changes jolting?
