This film defies description. The service I streamed it from described it as a "comedy/drama," which is as good as description as any. It's a very artistic film, and I can't really say that it's good or bad with any sort of conviction.
The film is in German, and I watched it with English subtitles. All the actors are dwarves. It takes place at some sort of institution (the purpose of which isn't clear. There is some farming activity, but not on a large scale. Instructors are also mentioned). The inmates of this institution have overthrown their instructors (captors?) and driven them from the facilities, except for one, who has fortified himself inside his office with one of the rebels as his prisoner.
The rebels ignore the remaining instructor, who haplessly tries to convince them to abandon their revolt. Various hijinks ensue, but it's unclear to what end. There's chickens, pigs, cars, motorcycles, blind dwarfs, weddings, bugs, and a crucifixion. Between these antics are occasional cuts back to the lone instructor and his captive, in which the instructor gives monologues revealing some exposition about the institution.
By the end, it's unclear who should be rooted for, or who even comes out the winner. While there is some resolution, it might be more accurate to say that the film stops rather than ends.
I enjoyed it. My favorite scenes are the instructor's monologues with the captive. The scene with the pig and the scene with the car and the plates are also interesting. However, there are some problems, such as the lack of structure or any clear plot. I've tried to refrain from spoilers, but I'm not sure what could even be considered a spoiler, quite honestly. The length is also a slight issue. A good 10-20 minutes could be shaved off and the effect of the film would have been unchanged. One scene in particular involving chickens towards the end of the film feels rather tedious, and is definitely the worst offender in this regard.
