When Bill Gambini and his college buddy, Stan Rothenstein, are arrested for allegedly killing a convenience store clerk in rural Alabama, their only hope for freedom in Bill’s cousin, Vincent LaGuardia Gambini, a newly minted lawyer with no trial experience. Vinny, with his frustrated fiancé Lisa in tow, must take on the Alabama legal system as he contends with Judge Chamberlain Haller and D.A. Jim Trotter to prove Bill’s and Stan’s innocence.
After over 30 years, this movie still holds up as an entertaining, funny and thoroughly compelling film that has even gone on to be taught in law schools all around the world as examples of how to prepare for trial and how to cross examine witnesses. Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei are a delight and the supporting cast brings plenty to the story as well, particularly Fred Gwynne (best known as TV’s Herman Munster) as Vinny’s nemesis, Judge Haller.
