It was a lot different than I expected. I ended it thinking to myself “oh, I actually liked it, yes” but it was marketed as a comedy and it really doesn’t feel like one. I was surprised that they covered such a dark topic, the topic of suicide - I feel like I don’t often see it come up in films from the 50s (I know this one is from 1960 but it was probably filmed in the 50s and 1960 kind of feels like a 50s year anyhow) and so it stood out to me in part because of it. I had really expected more of a typical romance film.
I do like the fact that in the end, Fran is the one who comes to Jack Lemmon’s character - the fact that it’s her choice to. I also like Fran’s sarcastic quips, I know she is portrayed as not being the best at spelling but her sarcastic quips make her feel more human and also stood out to me as her character was the opposite of the kind of characters Marilyn Monroe was famously playing. I had thought that the film would just portray Lemmon’s character as being someone who “deserved” Fran due to the fact that he saved her, and I was impressed because I felt that this didn’t happen. I loved the instrumentals. I actually oftentimes found myself not liking Lemmon’s character.
I felt the topic of suicide was handled a little bit more delicately than I’d have expected it to be for a 50s film. I enjoyed the aesthetics and like that the film took a different direction than expected.
