It’s weird, because there are definitely a lot of (admittedly popular/mainstream) classic films I enjoyed lots - rebel without a cause, freaks. Seven year itch, gone with the wind, a streetcar named desire, and if 70s films count as classics, LOTS of 70s films.
I watched Rebecca tonight. It’s been recommended to me a few times here. It is not a “bad” film. But, much like another 40s crime film I saw earlier this year that I don’t remember the name of anymore, it didn’t really leave that much of an impression. I found the plot to be fairly predictable (it was obvious to me from the start that Lawrence Oliver’s character killed his ex wife…) and I just didn’t find any of the characters fascinating. It’s not a bad film, I just didn’t care for it. “Paper Moon” (1973) and “Rocky Horror Picture Show” (1978) are the two films I’ve seen within the last month or so that stick out in my mind, not this one or the other 40s crime film I mentioned (where we learn the woman who the main character had been pursuing had her ex-husband’s wife set up and had her husband set up to be killed by the main character. I don’t remember the name of that one, which shows how little it meant to me. I found both that one and “Rebecca” to be too predictable.)
And yes, I understand that these films were likely groundbreaking for their time. Just not exciting to me as a modern day audience member.
