Did anyone else interpret the main characters of midnight Cowboy (1969) as being LGBT?

I was surprised to see so many on Reddit reject this interpretation. I mean, Rizzo quite literally has a daydream wherein Joe is shirtless, I don’t necessarily think they were in a “relationship” but I always thought there was something there.
