It’s always astounded me that “Man in the Moon” (1991) is so underrated

The film stars two big names (Reese Witherspoon and Jason London - though I suppose that although London had “Dazed and Confused,” he isn’t nearly as successful as Witherspoon at this point.) It takes place in the 50s, and I always felt that Witherspoon did such a great job here for what was really her first acting role. The story of Dani, Court, and Maureen is tragic - Witherspoon’s acting, and the direction/setting of the film really capture what it feels like to be young with few responsibilities, and to properly have feelings for someone for the first time ever. I fell in love with the setting - the film takes place almost entirely outdoors, and you’re able to appreciate the hot summer sun, the farm the characters live in, and their small town life (although I actually wouldn’t say that the film goes out of its way to romanticize the 50s.)

Why is the film so underrated? It’s not necessarily a “happy” film, but no one ever really talks about it and that has always surprised me.
