Question about “g”

If “gl” vowel is a palatal sound, what function does the g serve in a word like “ragno”? Why would it not be written as, say, “ranio”? (I’m new to this and guessing, perhaps wrongly, that “ni” vowel is the same sound as “gn” vowel.)
